Awards and Chances You Can’t Pass Up

Sparetire Design is awarded the WW Bride's Choice AwardWow only a few weeks into 2012 and I already know this is going to be a fantabulous year! The year started off with a bang, Sparetire Design was awarded The Bride’s Choice Award from Wedding Wire! “The esteemed annual awards program recognizes the top local wedding vendors from the WeddingWire Network who demonstrate excellence in quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism within the wedding industry. While many industry awards are selected by the organization, Sparetire Design was selected based on its stellar reviews from past newlywed clients. ” I have the best clients, thank you to all of you for your kind words!

Speaking of awards, this is the season: The Golden Globes, The Grammy’s and The Academy Awards (Oscar’s) are always this time of year. Through my membership and affiliation with The Artisan Group, I have the opportunity to have Sparetire Design business cards, in each celebrity swag bag gifted at the GBK Luxury Gift Lounge for the Nominees and Presenters of the Academy Awards. Here is a link to the official Oscar’s Gift Guide that all attendees of the lounge will receive (as well as their bags full of wonderful hand made goodies!). Be sure to check out these shops, truly amazing artists!!!

I have also just experienced a once in a lifetime event.  My brother (who is wonderful and awesome) invited me to attend the Super Bowl XLVI!!!!!. He works for the NFL network so not only was I able to attend “the game” I was able to accompany him to all the NFL exclusive functions. I mingled with greats like Phil Simms, Howie Long and Jim Kelly to name a few. We attended the NFL Saturday Night dinner party and concert were CMT Crossroads hosted an amazing line up: Sugar Ray opened for Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood. Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood were incredible!!!!! Effortless and truly talented! We attended the very posh and swanky NFL Tailgate where I watched The Fray play live on NBC (I was in the front row you may have seen me) and Lenny Kravitz put on a smashing show. Of course there was the game, and what a great match up of the NY Giants and NE Patriots, wasn’t it!?! Of course we were over the moon by the Giants win so we just had to celebrate! The whole experience was really amazing. It may take me all week to recover 🙂

Creative Business and Self Discovery

Doesn’t running your own business sound wonderful and easy? You make your own hours, use your passion as your guide, you don’t have to answer to any one, and best of all work in your pajamas.

That’s the bright side, and sometimes looking at the bright side blinds you to the whole picture. Running a business isn’t about your product, your talent or even your clients; it is a road to self-discovery that can often be daunting, troublesome and truly eye opening. You start out knowing your strengths and quickly realize your weaknesses and how they often out weigh your strengths. Learning to overcome and work around those weaknesses becomes just as important as refining your creative skills.

You have to search your whole self for answers to questions you never considered when “my own business” was just a passion and a dream. Now that you are running that creative business you need to know not only why you create and for whom, you have to have a constant analysis of what is working and what isn’t, what trends are blooming and which fading, where you are making an impact and what avenues to leave to have a more focused approach. You are every department head and underling that big corporations have; except it is just you in your cute little jammers. (and third cup of coffee)

But every day you show up. You show up whether you have an idea or not, and you work, and try and try again, and keep plugging away. It isn’t easy. It isn’t always wonderful, but to be able to say you run your own business based on your passion, now that is something.

“So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.” – Dr. Suess, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Yup. What he said.

Take a Peek Thursday

I am a huge fan of buying handmade and local, I always have been. It seems that more and more people are realizing the value in handmade products and the importance of supporting small businesses and artisans. I think our culture as a whole is starting to realize the value of handmade. Finally.

For many artisans and small businesses word of mouth and grass roots style marketing is key to success. With social media and other social apps, virtual networking and sharing is becoming an integral part of branding and advertising. Sharing favorite finds, talking about great customer service, supporting other artisans are prevalent on these sites. I want to bring some of that sharing and promoting here to Sparetire Design’s blog. I have the pleasure and honor to know many talented artisans who all excel at their craft. Every couple of Thursday’s I will ask one of them to share some of their experiences and some of their favorite finds. Let’s help spread the word about wonderful artists!!!

I’ll start!

A little about me… I have been always been creative, always making things, drawing, painting… this love of creativity and art drove me to art school. I am fortunate to have the opportunity and focus to pursue this creative avenue and couple it with my entrepreneurial drive. I have taken my freelance graphic design studio and transformed it into a graphic and stationery design studio. I sell my designer stationery note cards, personalized stationery sets and wedding invitations and stationery on Etsy, Artfire, Zazzle and soon will be integrating a market on the Sparetire Design site.

Through these marketplaces I have found so many objects of desire! From hand knit slippers (that never come off my feet, I  L O V E them!), hand thrown pottery (great gift!), ceramic travel mugs (seriously who couldn’t use one of these!? Eco friendly too.) and hand sewn cozy‘s for those mugs (Tara Dara makes the BEST sewn accessories for electronics and mugs).

But my ultimate favorite hand made purchase goes to (drum roll please) the hand sewn small wristlet by Sew Beastly! This wristlet is the perfect size to carry everything I need with me; my phone, my cards, chap stick and coordinating change purse! The colors fit my personality, the craftsmanship is incredible (that ruffle detail is so stinkin’ sweet) and I can’t tell you how many compliments I receive carrying it around. A D O R A B L E!

I hope you go check out some of these shops and items, they are very much worth your time! Join the in the sharing by commenting below!

Stay tuned for our next Take a Peek Thursday!

Hello world!

Well it’s a new year, so I am creating a new blog. My old blog focused on the happening of Sparetire Design… my new focus will be a little wider spread. I want to focus on artists as a group, all different kids or artists: musicians, jewelry aritsts, painters, photographers… the possibilities are endless! Occasionally there will be posts about Sparetire Design and the adventures of running a business and a growing family. Sometimes I will share some of my favorite finds I come across, products I can’t wait to try,  and I am going to have a “spotlight” feature once in awhile where I will pick an artist to share their experiences with selling handmade and buying handmade.

This coming year holds some more changes and exciting opportunities for Sparetire Design.

1. Through my association with The Artisan Group, I will be participating in GBK Productions Luxury Artisan Gift Lounge at the Academy Awards (that’s the OSCARS folks!). All celebrities and presenters in attendance will receive a swag bag filled with treasures from TAG members! I am so honored and thrilled to be able to participate.

2. I am integrating a stationery shop directly into my website… I will let you know when it is up and ready!!! For now you can still purchase our lovely stationery items on Etsy and Artfire.

3. New blog!
