Creative Business and Self Discovery

Doesn’t running your own business sound wonderful and easy? You make your own hours, use your passion as your guide, you don’t have to answer to any one, and best of all work in your pajamas.

That’s the bright side, and sometimes looking at the bright side blinds you to the whole picture. Running a business isn’t about your product, your talent or even your clients; it is a road to self-discovery that can often be daunting, troublesome and truly eye opening. You start out knowing your strengths and quickly realize your weaknesses and how they often out weigh your strengths. Learning to overcome and work around those weaknesses becomes just as important as refining your creative skills.

You have to search your whole self for answers to questions you never considered when “my own business” was just a passion and a dream. Now that you are running that creative business you need to know not only why you create and for whom, you have to have a constant analysis of what is working and what isn’t, what trends are blooming and which fading, where you are making an impact and what avenues to leave to have a more focused approach. You are every department head and underling that big corporations have; except it is just you in your cute little jammers. (and third cup of coffee)

But every day you show up. You show up whether you have an idea or not, and you work, and try and try again, and keep plugging away. It isn’t easy. It isn’t always wonderful, but to be able to say you run your own business based on your passion, now that is something.

“So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.” – Dr. Suess, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Yup. What he said.
